What you want to do is insert the wireless router between your ISP's modem and your computers. This way the wireless router will take your Internet signal and make it wireless so you can connect to the Internet with your laptop.
Look at the back of your wireless router. The four ports are to connect to the Internet with wires. The other port is to accept the Internet from your ISP's modem. This is called the WAN or Internet port.
Plug an ethernet cable into one of the ports in the back of the router and into the ethernet port on your computer. If you didn't get an ethernet cable with the wireless router, then you'll have to buy one. But most wireless routers come with an ethernet cable.
Now launch your browser, and type the IP address into the address bar. Enter the user name and password from the bottom of the router. If you have any problems, consult the instructions that came with the router. I currently have a USB broadband modem. I purchased a wireless router which has ethernet connections. Can I connect the USB broadband modem to my wireless router using a complicated selection of cable adapters ie ethernet to USB (I cant find a USB TO ETHERNET adapter). If this is not possible, if I plug the USB modem into my XP computer, can I bridge the connections to my Win 98 computer using the XP computer as the host?
You cannot use cable adapters to convert the modem's USB into Ethernet. you could also connect the modem to the XP machine and bridge connections, yes. 1. configure an internet gateway.
2. configure the router.
1. Set up the internet machine to SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION (you can use the wizard if you want, or just enable Internet Connection Sharing), which will turn the 98 into an internet gateway. that gateway needs an IP address designated, however. Type the address assigned in step 1. thats that for the router. Generally the main reason user builds a wireless network in homes or in small offices is to be able to share single broadband internet connection with many computers.
The Netgear DGND3700 N600 wireless router and Cradlepoint MBR1400 wireless mobile router are two multi-function routers you can choose to build your small business network. The Netgear DGND3700 is an all-in-one wireless router with built-in ADSL modem. So if you subscribe the DSL internet service, you don't need an ADSL modem. Can you use this router for Cable internet services? Unlike the DGND3700 which is designed for wired internet connection either DSL or Cable, the Cradlepoint MBR1400 is designed for both wired broadband and cellular internet connections concurrently. In failover mode, you can configure the wired Internet (with cable or DSL modem) as the primary internet connection and the USB / Express-Card modems as the backup connection. Both DGND3700 and MBR1400 routers support dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) however, the DGND3700 supports dual band simultaneously and MBR1400 supports selectable dual band. Both routers include five gigabit Ethernet ports but they have different functions. The DGND3700 ADSL wireless router includes four gigabit LAN Ethernet ports and one gigabit WAN port for cable modem connection. But MBR1400 includes five gigabit Ethernet ports configurable for WAN ports. MBR1400 wireless mobile router is very flexible to let you configure the number of WAN ports for load balancing.
The MBR1400 wireless mobile router is ideal solution to support small businesses knowing that the router supports three USB ports and two Express-card ports for cellular data modems and includes five gigabit Ethernet ports configurable for WAN ports for load balancing or failover modes.
By following the tech support instruction you can very well set up and configure the Wireless-G router. At first you need to connect the Wireless-G router to the cable modem. You need to turn off both the Linksys Wireless-G router and the cable modem before you go on to connect them. Take one end of the Ethernet cable and plug it into the cable modem. You will find the port at the back side panel of the Wireless-G router. Now you need to connect the Wireless-G router to your laptop. The other end of the Ethernet cable is already connected with Wireless-G router. Ensure that the Ethernet cable is inserted in the right port. Now you need to plug on the cable and power on the cable modem, your laptop and Wireless-G router. You can easily see if the connection is established because the status indicator for internet connection will blink if the connection is established. Now you need to plug the router's power adapter into the power port of the router's back panel. Now wait for at least two minutes so that cable modem could be connected properly to the Wireless-G router. You are now in the default IP address of Wireless-G router. Click 'ok' so that the setting page for Wireless-G router starts loading.
Configure the wireless and security settings. You will see several tabs for changing the router's settings in the homepage of the Wireless-G router.
